Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
