Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
