Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
