One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with others instead handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Today, anime production is organized in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each annually, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
