New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
