Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the option to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
